SUMMARY:Transformative Potentials and Challenges of AI in Aerospace
DESCRIPTION:Transformative Potentials and Challenges of AI in Aerospace For decades\, aviation has stood out as one of the safest modes of transportation\, achieved through rigorous certification processes that uphold uncompromising quality standards across aircraft development\, testing\, operation\, maintenance\, and inspection. Presently\, we stand at an inflection point\, where emerging technologies like AI have the potential to reshape the aerospace sector. While unmanned aerial vehicles are already a reality and autonomous delivery drones and urban air mobility are on the horizon\, safety concerns rightly impose caution on their adoption in aerospace. This presentation unveils potential AI applications\, navigates challenges in aerospace certification of AI-enabled systems\, examines ongoing certification efforts\, and spotlights the University of Stuttgart’s endeavors in driving this paradigm shift. Zamira Daw is a Professor of Aircraft Systems at the University of Stuttgart. She studied Electrical Engineering at Javeriana University. During her PhD at Kassel University in Germany and subsequent postdoctoral research at the University of Maryland in USA\, she specialized in model-driven development for safety-critical embedded systems using formal methods. She began her aerospace journey at Raytheon Technologies Research Center\, contributing to areas such as formal verification\, certification\, knowledge reasoning\, and autonomous systems. Currently\, her goal is to develop innovative certification methods that facilitate the integration of AI into aerospace systems.
